 We think that the biggest issue can be seen in the WikiLeaks episode form before Christmas. Government pressure on services that WikiLeaks used forced them to cut ties with WikiLeaks. While we understand that governments mightn't want certain information getting out because it could damage relations with other countries this is a dangerous path to take.

What can be done

We think that it shows the danger in using commercial services - especially those based in the USA. Nothing can really be done about it as governments have the power to do what they want about this.

 This is a good point. Whilst in earlier days of the Internet a lot of services were not linked to big companies, now there is likely to be a big company involved somewhere - whether it's in providing the domain name, hosting the site or processing payments. 

 

Do you think this creates a need for changes in how global Internet companies are regulated, so that one government (particularly the US) isn't able to excercise such power? Or does it need community groups to create more of their own online spaces like the independent RiseUp.net
